Covid-19 isn't going away anytime soon, but free disease test kits from the federal government are. The program that delivers up to 16 at-home tests to Americans is set to pause after Friday because "Congress hasn't provided additional funding to replenish the nation's stockpile of tests," the program's website reads. While a Biden administration official has said the program "will expeditiously resume" if it receives funding, for the time being many Americans will lose access to the free kits at the end of the week. |
Thanks to reporting from CNBC Make It's Mike Winters, I made sure to order eight more tests before the program pauses. The process was easy: I went to the official government testing website and simply filled out my name and address. In less than 30 seconds, I had a new batch of tests on their way to my apartment. Indeed, the only requirement to receive the free tests is a U.S. residential address. You can also enter your email address to receive tracking updates from the Postal Service. The maximum number of tests allowed for each household is 16. Once the program ends, most Americans can still get test kits, Winters notes, either via their private health insurance plans or by getting reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid. |
