Ukrainian forces come under renewed Russian attack in key eastern city

RUSSIA AND UKRAINE AT WAR

Ukrainian troops holding out in the ruins of Sievierodonetsk came under renewed heavy assault from Russian forces who see the capture of the industrial city as key to control of the surrounding Luhansk region.

In southern Ukraine, another major battleground in the war, authorities warned that Russian attacks on agricultural sites including warehouses were compounding a global food crisis that has stirred concerns of famine in some developing countries.

Turkey's foreign minister said a United Nations plan to restart Ukrainian grain exports along a sea corridor was "reasonable" and requires more talks with Moscow and Kyiv to ensure ships would be safe.

The town of Valuyki in western Russia has become a crucial staging post in the latest phase of Russia’s war. It's a place where soldiers’ relatives and private citizens are working to provide supplies and equipment for troops based near the town to address shortages, including drones, radios and heat-detecting rifle sights.

Moscow's chief rabbi has left Russia after coming under pressure to support its invasion of Ukraine, according to a relative. Swiss-born Pinchas Goldschmidt had served as Moscow's chief rabbi since 1993, while also heading a large European rabbinical group.

A car drove into a crowd of people in Berlin, killing one person and leaving five with life-threatening injuries, a fire service spokesperson said, in a district of the German capital popular with tourists and shoppers.

A Chinese official said an "iron-clad partnership" with Cambodia was bolstered by military cooperation, as work began on a China-funded upgrade of Cambodia's biggest naval base that has raised U.S. concern about China's growing influence.

Police in northern India arrested a youth leader from the Hindu nationalist ruling party for posting anti-Muslim comments on social media after derogatory remarks by another party official about the Prophet Mohammad led to a diplomatic furor.

Iran removed two surveillance cameras of the International Atomic Energy Agency from one of its nuclear facilities, state television reported, a move that is likely to raise tensions with the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

Belgium's King Philippe returned a traditional mask to Democratic Republic of Congo on his first visit to the former colony, where many remain angry at Belgium's failure to apologize for decades of brutality. By some estimates, killings, famine and disease killed up to 10 million Congolese during just the first 23 years of Belgium's rule.

U.S.

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, easily won the Republican nomination to seek reelection in November, while a former member of Trump's cabinet was locked in a tight race in his Montana primary for the U.S. House of Representatives.

San Francisco residents voted to recall District Attorney Chesa Boudin, Edison Research projected, in a nationally watched election viewed as a referendum on violent crime.

Democrats in the U.S. Senate said they were encouraged by talks with Republicans on firearms legislation, but warned that any compromise would fall well short of all the steps they say are needed to curb gun violence.

A police officer hurt by Trump supporters trying to overturn his election defeat and a filmmaker who recorded some leaders of the U.S. Capitol riot will be among the first witnesses when hearings into the assault begin tomorrow, organizers said.

Todd and Julie Chrisley, stars of the reality TV show 'Chrisley Knows Best', were found guilty by a federal court jury of federal charges of tax evasion and conspiring to swindle community banks out of $30 million in fraudulent loans.

The war in Ukraine has made the growth outlook far bleaker even though the global economy should avoid a bout of 1970s-style stagflation, the OECD said, slashing its growth forecasts and jacking up its inflation estimates.
