Despite some select shares getting a pop from the meme trading crowd, most short bets are in fact working and not getting blown up by retail traders via so-called short squeezes.
Of the 10 Russell 3,000 stocks with the highest short interest as a percentage of float, only one name is up for the year, according to Bespoke Investment Group. Of the 25 names with the highest short interest in the index, only eight have seen positive returns in 2021, and six have seen their share prices cut in half.
