On Today's Show

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN:

First, Fareed gives his Take on the suspected explosive packages sent to numerous prominent figures this week, and what this says about the political climate in the United States.

"We have seen ugly times before as a nation. The Alien and Sedition Acts, the first Red Scare, McCarthyism – all saw deeply divisive politics and incendiary rhetoric. But in all these cases, we look back on the period with shame – as we surely will this one."

Then, Fareed hosts a live panel to discuss the shooting Saturday morning at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Joining Fareed will be Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, Thomas Friedman, a New York Times op-ed columnist, and David Frum, a senior editor at The Atlantic.

Plus: Earlier this week, Fareed moderated a panel that included discussion of three of the big foreign policy issues confronting the United States: US-Saudi ties in light of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, what to make of the rise of China, and how to respond to Russian meddling. Joining Fareed: Samantha Power, US Ambassador to the United Nations under President Obama, Michael Hayden, a former director of the CIA and the NSA, and Stephen Hadley, national security adviser under President George W. Bush.
