In a cooling labor market, it's important to make your resume as attractive as possible to a potential employer. In addition to tailoring your job experience to align with the roles you are applying for, you can give yourself an edge by highlighting skills that are universally valued by hiring managers. CNBC Make It's Gili Malinsky spoke with Ian Siegel, co-founder and CEO of job recruiting site ZipRecruiter, about what exactly employers are looking for. There are a handful of soft skills that pop up time and time again across millions of listings, Siegel says. These intangibles "play a critical role in [an employer's] decision about whom they want to hire." These are the eight most in-demand soft skills, ranked in order of how commonly they appear in ZipRecruiter listings. - Communication skills (6.1 million listings)
- Customer service (5.5 million listings)
- Scheduling (5 million listings)
- Time management (3.6 million listings)

Communication is about more than giving good presentations, Malinsky reports. Companies want to know that prospective employees will be able to manage their email loads in a hybrid workplace. Likewise, they want to know that an employee will be able to carry out all the responsibilities handed to them. "No matter what kind of role you have, if you can't organize your time," you can't be effective, Fairygodboss CEO Georgene Huang tells Make It. But don't simply list out your soft skills. Instead, give examples of how your mastery of the skills has helped you succeed in past roles.
