Sept. 29, 2019

On Today's Show

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN:

First, Fareed gives his take on the Ukraine scandal.

"Whether you think it rises to the level of an impeachable offense, can we all agree that what President Trump did was profoundly wrong?" Fareed asks, pointing out that "Trump is a particularly egregious example, but his misbehavior fits a global trend."

Leaders from India to Turkey to the Philippines have overstepped democratic norms, while support for strongmen and tribal politics have gained ground. In the US, political parties used to rein in those excesses, Fareed says, and America needs the GOP to "play a role that upholds democracy, rather than feasting on its destruction."

Next, Fareed talks with former British Prime Minister David Cameron in an exclusive interview, Cameron's first on American TV to discuss his new book, For the Record; Brexit and whether he regrets holding the referendum in 2016; what he makes of Trump; and the Iran nuclear deal.

Historian and Washington Post columnist Anne Applebaum then discusses the Ukraine scandal—and why "this is a profoundly corrupt situation that is weirdly familiar to Ukrainians."

Dina Esfandiary, a fellow at Harvard University's Belfer Center and at The Century Foundation, explains why Iran can't give in to US pressure and why Saudi Arabia doesn't want a war, and New York Times columnist Tom Friedman breaks down Israel's elections—including the complicated politics of who will serve as prime minister—and why "independence" will be the key word as Trump's impeachment inquiry plays out.
