here. Straight talk from the money editor For some reason, $1 million seems to be the magic retirement number. Don't be fooled. Granted, for some a million bucks will produce plenty of income in retirement but for others it simply won't be enough. There are many factors to take into consideration for what someone needs in retirement. At a minimum, many financial experts say a person must have a retirement portfolio that is 25 times their living needs, net of Social Security and pension payments, if they plan to retire at 70. Meanwhile, some financial gurus like to see the person have a portfolio that is 40 times their living needs. The point is that Americans need to do some actual pre-retirement calculations before they go buy their cabana wear.
