On Fareed Zakaria GPS Today

Insights, analysis and must reads from CNN's Fareed Zakaria and the Global Public Square team, compiled by Global Briefing editor Jason Miks.

December 31, 2017

On Today's Show

Regular editions of Fareed's Global Briefing will return from January 2, 2018.

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN:

First, Fareed gives his take on America's "retreat" from its traditional role of international leadership.

"This, then, is the condition of the new international system today. Its creator, upholder and enforcer has withdrawn into self-centered isolation. The second great supporter and advocate of the open, rule-based world, Europe, has not been able to act assertively on the world stage with any clear vision or purpose. And in this period, China, Russia and a host of smaller, illiberal powers are surging forward to fill the vacuum," Fareed says.

Then, Fareed hosts a panel to discuss U.S. foreign policy under President Trump, America's role in the world, and the key global trends to watch for in 2018. Joining Fareed are Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, Gideon Rose, editor of Foreign Affairs, and Walter Russell Mead, a professor of foreign affairs at Bard College and a distinguished fellow at the Hudson Institute.

Also on the show: Tensions between the United States and Russia are arguably at their greatest since the Cold War. But the history of antipathy and distrust between the two goes back further than the Cold War. How does history inform today? Fareed speaks with Simon Sebag Montefiore, a historian, novelist and author of "The Romanovs: 1613-1918," who has written extensively about Russia.

Plus: Fareed is joined by Harold Evans, once voted the greatest newspaper editor in history, who is author of the new book "Do I Make Myself Clear?: Why Writing Well Matters." Evans discusses the frequent misuse of language – especially in business and politics – and how it leads to "distortion and deception of ordinary people."
